Second Jury

The Second Jury of the Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst 2009 will choose the prize winner on September 22, 2009 after viewing the exhibition at the Nationalgalerie im Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart - Berlin. The five members of the Jury are Daniel Birnbaum (Director of the 53rd Biennale of Venice), Sam Keller (Director of the Fondation Beyeler, Basel), Christine Macel (Curator at Centre Pompidou, Paris), Gabriele Knapstein (Curator at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin) and Udo Kittelmann (Director of the Nationalgalerie, Berlin)


Daniel Birnbaum was born 1963 in Stockholm. Since 2001 he ist he director of the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Städelschule) in Frankfurt-Main. In Frankfurt he also is director of the exhibition hall Neuer Portikus for contemporary art. Birnbaum studied History of Art, Philosophy and Comparative Literature in Stockholm, Berlin and New York. He has been working as art critic for international art magazines, publisher and free curator. Among his publications are scientific papers and translations on Novalis, Martin Heidegger, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Jacques Derrida and Thomas Bernhard. Birnbaum has contributed to many Biennales and is the current director of the 53rd Biennale of Venice.

Sam Keller was born in 1966 in Basel. He studied history of art and philosophy at the University of Basel. After several different occupations and travels he became head of communications of the Art Basel in 1994 and deputy director in 1998. In the years 2000 to 2007 Keller was director of the Art Basel.
Since 2008 Sam Keller is director of the Fondation Beyeler in Basel.

Udo Kittelmann After years of being a professional optician Udo Kittelmann worked from 1987 to 1992 as a free curator for Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich, Kunsthalle Innsbruck, Kunstverein Salzburg and others. In 1993 he became art director of the Kunstverein Ludwigsburg and in 1994 director of Kölnischer Kunstverein. From 2002 to 2008 he was director of the Museum for Modern Art in Frankfurt am Main.
Since November 2008 Udo Kittelmann is director of the Nationalgalerie Berlin.

Gabriele Knapstein was born in 1963. She is an art historian living in Berlin. Since 1994 Gabriele Knapstein has been working for the Institute for Foreign Relations (Institut für Auslands-
beziehungen, ifa) and since 2003 as a curator at the Nationalgalerie im Hamburger Bahnhof - Musuem für Gegenwart - Berlin. Selected exhibitions with works from the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection at Hamburger Bahnhof: "Ich kann mir nicht jeden Tag ein Ohr abschneiden". Dekonstruktionen des Künstlermythos (2008); "there is never a stop and never a finish". In memoriam Jason Rhoades (2007); Jenseits des Kinos. Die Kunst der Projektion (2006).

Christine Macel was born in 1969 and today lives in Paris. Since 2000 she is chief curator at the Musée National d'Art Moderne - Centre Pompidou. She curated the exhibitions "Sophie Calle", "Dionysiac", "Airs de Paris", "Philippe Parreno" and others. Christine Macel worked as an art critic for several magazines such as artpress, Flash Art und Artforum.
She recently published a book entitled "Time taken about contemporary art practices and time issues".
